Collateral Ligament Reconstruction

Collateral ligament reconstruction

The collateral ligaments control side to side movements of the knee. They make sure that the knee is stable throughout the range of movement. Damaging these ligaments is quite rare and are usually part of a bigger injury (multi-ligament injury MLI) caused by an abnormal twisting or sideways forces.

I will assess these structures as part of your examination.

The MRI scan is good at detecting collateral ligament tears.

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) has a good ability to heal with bracing and physiotherapy, and doesn’t often need to be operated on unless it is part of a multi ligament injury.

The outer, lateral collateral ligament is rare and is usually damaged in high energy injuries such as car accidents. These ligaments can be reconstructed and augmented by using strong, synthetic graft.
